Wickford Girlguiding Centenary Mural – A Gift to the Community
2019/20 marked the 100th birthdays of 1st Wickford Brownies and 1st Wickford Guides. As part of their special centenary celebrations, and as a gift to the community, Girlguiding Wickford District has designed and created a mural which has been installed in the pedestrian walkway adjacent to the railway bridge in the High Street.
It not only shows 100 years of guiding history in Wickford, but also the town’s growth, buildings and memorable events during this time, all tied together with the River Crouch running through as a timeline.
It was designed by one of their leaders and completed by members late last year, but is only being installed now due to the delays caused by COVID-19.
They have been lucky enough to secure funding for the project from the Jack Petchey Foundation, the Essex County Council Locality Fund, and from a local winner of the Pride of Essex Awards.
A massive thank you to Essex Highways who have not only agreed to install it without charge, but have assisted throughout this journey in gaining all the necessary permissions. A thank you too to Essex County Council and Basildon Borough Council, who have undertaken to maintain it.
